When using Chinese dating sites lead to marriage

Chinese dating sites don’t lead only to romance; they sometimes also lead to marriage. What happens when an American wants to marry a Chinese citizen?

There are a few things to consider, some of which Chinese dating sites don’t really get into. After all, they aren’t marriage sites! Here’s what you should keep in mind if you’ve found the love of your life and would like to tie the knot:

  • Legal residence. If you want to get married in China, one of you must have legal residence in the country. China does not allow foreigners on tourist visas to marry in the country.
  • General requirements for U.S. citizens. It is important to understand that the regulations for marriage in China vary significantly among the country’s different provinces, cities, and towns. If you are a U.S. citizen, you will typically be asked to provide a valid passport and valid Chinese visa.
  • Other requirements. Other things you might be asked to provide include proof of legal residence of at least one party, a notarized Affidavit of Marriageability, proof of final divorce or annulment (or death certificate of deceased spouse), three photographs of the couple together with a red background, and a registration fee.

Although the above information is currently accurate, it might not be comprehensive, and when you’re getting married, you want to cover all your bases. Therefore, it is advisable that you check with the Chinese Civil Affairs Office to make sure that you are fully prepared for marriage in China!

The engagement ring and Asian dating

When it comes to Asian dating, there’s no question that common practices and customs differ greatly from those in the West, so why wouldn’t engagement customs also be unique? Many times, Western men are surprised by just how different things really are.

Engagement ring

What happens when Asian dating leads a couple to fall in love? The result is frequently the same as it is in the West: a marriage proposal ensues.

Does a Chinese woman expect an engagement ring? The short answer is both yes and no. Traditionally, there is no engagement ring custom in China. Nevertheless, many modern Chinese couples follow the trend of American couples and get engagement rings. When a couple marries, neither wears a ring in the traditional sense. In fact, most women wear a gold or silver bracelet engraved with a phoenix or dragon instead.

The engagement ring is a symbol of a couple’s love and intention to marry. It’s a wonderful idea, but in the modern United States, this tradition has fallen by the wayside. The engagement ring is less about what the ring actually represents and more about the ring itself. It’s about how much the guy spends and the cut, clarity, color and carat.

If you are planning to ask your special girl to marry you, there is no proper engagement ring requirement. If you do want to get her a ring, think about what she might like. Have fun with it and don’t limit yourself to just diamonds and platinum. You can choose anything based on her personal preference.

When Asian dating leads to a wedding

When a western man meets a woman through an online Asian dating website, it often leads to the next step: marriage. However, because China has a long history steeped in rich culture, the wedding traditions can be quite different from those with which a westerner is familiar. If a couple plans to marry in China, or even follow some of these traditions, it helps to have an idea of what is to come.

Matchmaking

Although Asian dating sites have frequently taken the place of traditional matchmaking in China, it still does occur from time to time. Traditionally, the first step in a relationship would be for a family to hire a matchmaker who would, in turn, visit another family’s home to seek a proposal. From that point on, each family would visit a fortune teller who would advise on the compatibility of the couple. If he or she found good results, a marriage deal would ensue. Essentially, this is how Chinese arranged marriages work.

Some families still opt for the arranged marriage, but more often than not, Chinese singles find their own true love and a modern engagement follows. Even in China, many modern men offer an engagement ring to their betrothed.

Betrothal gifts and bridal dowry

Betrothal gifts and a bridal dowry are traditional parts of any Chinese engagement and marriage. Today, the engagement ring is often seen as a betrothal gift, but in the past the groom’s family would send an array of gifts to the bride’s family. In most cases, betrothal gifts were things such as cakes and food. It is important to note that once the bride’s family accepted these special gifts, the wedding could not be called off lightly.

In turn, tradition mandates a bridal dowry. The bride delivers her dowry, or an assortment of gifts, to her husband’s family after they have been wed. In China, when a woman marries, she becomes part of her husband’s family, leaving her family home behind. For the rest of her life, her familial responsibility will lie with her new family. The value of the dowry was often used to determine the bride’s status in her new household.

Fortune teller consultation

Even in these modern times, some traditions still remain. This happens to be the case with the fortune teller consultation with regard to Chinese weddings. Traditionally, before an engagement can be confirmed publicly, each family will consult a fortuneteller who will analyze not only the couple’s names, but also their date, year and time of birth, to determine if they really are compatible.

In the past, if the fortune teller found negative results, then the engagement would not go ahead. If the analysis was favorable, traditional families would confirm the engagement with the practice of ‘three matchmakers and six proofs’. The proofs were a measuring vessel, an abacus, a pair of scissors, a ruler, a set of scales, and a mirror. Today, many modern families still observe this custom as a fun way to respect their tradition and heritage.

When Chinese dating leads to a wedding

Chinese dating can often lead to marriage, which ultimately means that there is going to be a wedding.  This is an exciting time, but for a groom who is not fully immersed into the Chinese culture, a Chinese wedding can be a bit different from what he might be expecting.

Some grooms-to-be might experience a little bit of culture shock because Chinese wedding customs are a lot different than those in the West.  If you didn’t take the time to learn about the culture when you started Chinese dating, now is definitely the time!

Here are some basic guidelines.  Keep in mind that this list isn’t exhaustive, so additional research might be a good idea:

  • Picking up the bride.  One of the high points of a Chinese wedding is when the groom picks up his bride.  You must pass various tests of strength and intelligence, one of which involves preparing red envelopes filled with money to distribute to the bride’s family in order to take her away to her new life.
  • The marriage toast.  Much like Western weddings, the bride and groom drink to a toast. However, this has a greater significance in the Chinese wedding celebration.  The couple stand and face each other and each person takes a glass of wine.  They then intertwine their arms and each of them drinks the other’s entire glass.  This binds the marriage.
  • Disturbing the nuptial chamber.  Don’t worry; this isn’t quite what it sounds like!  This tradition is a fun and interesting way to wish the newlyweds good luck.  Friends and relatives think up various entertaining skits that the couple must act out in front of the entire wedding party.  Don’t be embarrassed… it’s all in good fun!
